Seventeen people had been killed in two mass shootings that occurred in shut proximity to one another in a rural town in South Africa, police mentioned Saturday (September 28, 2024).

A search was underway for the suspects, nationwide police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe mentioned in a press release. The victims had been 15 girls and two males, she mentioned. One different individual was in important situation in the hospital.

The shootings occurred Friday (September 27, 2024) evening in the town of Lusikisiki in Eastern Cape province in southeastern South Africa. Video launched by police confirmed that the shootings occurred at two homes in the same neighbourhood.

Twelve girls and a person had been killed in one home and three girls and a person had been killed in the opposite home, police mentioned.
